The Marathon’s Slow Arrival in Indian Cities
Mass-participation running changed which sports urban Indians actually do, not just watch.
The shift from watching sport to participating in it is rare, and city marathons are the clearest example India has produced.
What the events created
A fixed date on the calendar gives amateur runners something to train towards, and training groups form around it. The race is the visible part; the twenty weeks before it are the actual product.
The elite and amateur split
Big-city races run two competitions at once: a professional field chasing prize money and a mass field chasing personal times. They share a start line and almost nothing else.
The infrastructure question
Year-round running requires safe road surfaces, lighting and air quality — none of which a single annual event provides. That gap is the main brake on participation growth.
Where it goes next
Smaller cities running their own events, with local clubs rather than corporate sponsorship as the organising unit.
