Classical, Rapid and Blitz: Which Chess Are You Watching?
The time control changes the sport more than the players do.
Three games share a board and almost nothing else. Knowing which one you’re watching explains most of what looks strange.
Classical
Hours per player, with increments. Deep preparation matters enormously, draws are common between evenly matched players, and a single mistake is usually decisive.
Rapid
Compressed enough that preparation thins out and practical judgement takes over. Often the format where the strongest player doesn’t win.
Blitz
Minutes per game. Pattern recognition and hand speed dominate; objectively lost positions are saved regularly because the opponent’s clock is also running.
What this means for a viewer
Evaluate a blunder against the clock, not the engine bar. A move that looks careless with three seconds left is a different act from the same move with an hour available.
