The Field Athlete’s Season: Peaking Twice a Year
How throwers and jumpers structure a year around two competitions that actually count.
A field athlete’s calendar is built backwards from two dates, and everything else is preparation disguised as competition.
The build phase
Winter is heavy strength work, with technical volume kept deliberately low. Performances during this period mean very little and are not intended to.
Sharpening
As the target competition approaches, load drops and technical precision rises. Athletes often throw or jump their best in training weeks before they do it in a stadium.
Why peaking is fragile
The window is narrow — a few weeks — and a minor injury inside it can cost a whole season, because there is no second attempt at a championship date.
