The Endgame Is Where Games Are Actually Decided

Why the least glamorous phase of the game is the one strong players study first.

Amateurs study openings and hope the game ends early. Strong players study endgames and let the game go as long as it needs to.

Fewer pieces, more precision

With material reduced, evaluations become concrete rather than approximate. Positions are frequently winning or drawn by force, and knowing which is a matter of knowledge, not judgement.

King activity inverts

The piece hidden all game becomes the strongest attacker. Beginners keep castling instincts too long and lose drawable positions to it.

Why it transfers backwards

Understanding which endgames are winning tells you which middlegame trades to seek. Endgame knowledge is really middlegame decision-making.

Where to start

King and pawn endings. Everything else builds on the ability to calculate them exactly.
