Every selection argument is really an argument about criteria. Here are the ones worth having.
All-time XIs are unfalsifiable and everyone knows it. They survive because the disagreement is the point — and because the criteria you choose reveal what you actually value in a cricketer.
Peak or longevity?
Do you pick the player at their absolute best for two seasons, or the one who was very good for fifteen? A team of peaks looks spectacular on paper and would probably lose to a team of durable professionals across a five-Test series.
Era adjustment
Averages aren’t comparable across decades. Covered pitches, fielding restrictions, bat technology and the sheer volume of cricket played all move the baseline. A number from one era needs translating before it can be set against another.
Balance beats stars
The most common mistake is picking eleven great individuals rather than a functioning side. You need someone to bat time, someone to bowl long spells into the wind, and a wicketkeeper who can handle spin on a turning day.
The honest conclusion
There is no correct XI, only a well-argued one. State your criteria first, apply them consistently, and accept that a reader with different criteria will reach a different team and be equally right.
